The Unique Benefits of Presence for Older Adults

Most of us think of paying attention simply as a way to avoid mistakes. That was certainly my motivation. I wanted to stop putting coffee cups in the refrigerator and reduce the small glitches that had become more common as I grew older. What surprised me was that presence turned out to offer much more than fewer mistakes.

As I practiced becoming more present, I began to notice unexpected changes in everyday life. Walks became enjoyable again because I was paying attention to the sights, sounds, and simple pleasures around me. Routine tasks became more satisfying because I completed them with greater competence and confidence. Instead of worrying about what I had forgotten, I found myself taking quiet pride in what I had done well.

Another unexpected benefit was that presence left less room for what I call the Anxiety Closet—those familiar habits of replaying old regrets, disappointments, and worries. When our attention stays with the present moment, it has less opportunity to wander into places that diminish our well-being. Presence doesn't solve yesterday's problems; it simply helps us spend more time living today's life.

Presence also seems to encourage gratitude. We rarely appreciate what we fail to notice. By paying closer attention, ordinary experiences—a morning cup of coffee, a pleasant conversation, a walk through the neighborhood—become fresh again. Gratitude often follows naturally because we are finally noticing the richness that has been there all along.

Perhaps the greatest surprise was that presence reduced boredom. As we grow older, our world often becomes smaller, and routine can begin to dominate our days. Yet boredom may not be caused simply by having too little to do. It may also come from paying too little attention. Presence transforms ordinary moments into experiences worth having.

What began as an effort to reduce everyday glitches gradually became something much more important. Presence brought greater competence, confidence, gratitude, well-being, and enjoyment of ordinary life. The solution became more valuable than the problem that inspired it. That is the unexpected gift of the Aging Robot.
